The Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project I was implemented through World Bank loan assistance at a total project cost of Rs. 2442 Crores from 2004 to 2012. The works taken up under the project included - Up gradation of 725 Km of roads, Enhanced Maintenance Works in about 1330 Km of roads, Road Safety, Black Spot Improvement Works and Institutional Development etc.

Government has formed Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project II in the year 2013 with an aim to upgrade high traffic road corridors in the State. The Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board (TNIDB) under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Chief Minister has allotted an amount of Rs. 65 Crore for carrying out DPR Preparation for a length of 2079 km. DPR preparation for the selected roads have been taken up through five Consultants and has been completed for about 600 km road length. DPR work for the remaining road is expected to be completed shortly. World Bank appraisal mission for the initial phase of the project was completed in mid December 2014 and loan agreement is expected to be signed in April 2015.

Project components

The World Bank has consented to support the GoTN’s broader state highway development initiative, through three components:

  1. Network Improvement:-
    Two Lane with paved shoulders -427Km, Four Lane-145Km, Multi-year OPRC – 600Km.
  2. Institutional Capacity Enhancement
  3. Road Safety Initiatives
